The deposited structures are components of the T4 tail baseplate in the
so-called "star" conformation. In order to assemble a biological multimer
(the sixfold symmetric baseplate) out of the deposited structures, one needs
to multiply them via a sixfold along Z axis. The baseplate in the star conformation contains at least six other proteins, for
which the authors do not have atomic structures yet. Thus, when you multiply the
deposited crystal structures, you will have a lot of empty space between
them.
